Matchup of The Week: Bearcats CB’s vs Vols WR’s

This won’t be one of my keys to the game but it is definitely a matchup that will very likely determine the flow (and possibly outcome) of the UC-UT game. Like most of the Vols’ team, they are talented but inexperienced. Don’t worry, you won’t have to hear that phrase for much longer. Anyways, with the scheme that Derek Dooley likes to go with, the fact that Tennessee’s run blocking and rushing is putrid, and that Tyler Bray is their quarterback, the Vols will likely pass a lot and try to get the ball to their primary receivers Justin Hunter and Da’Rick Rogers. I agree that deep zones will benefit the Bearcats defense as those two might shred Cheatham/Drane on man-to-man coverage. I hope the UC coaching staff is thinking the same way.

Bearcats, Vols each trying to regain their former glory

Interesting read and the title really says it all as Cincinnati and Tennessee are both trying to rebound from very pedestrian 2010 seasons. But the following quote caught my attention:

"As with any coaching search, there are what-ifs, and one wonders where Tennessee football might be now had Hamilton’s 2008 interview with then-Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly turned out differently.Hamilton said: “He (Kelly) was the only coach who wore an orange tie to the interview.”"

It’s no secret that Brian Kelly was looking for a way to get out Cincinnati after the 2008 Orange Bowl season but really gives you some insight into BK’s mindset while at UC. It also explains how he was building his teams for short term success to provide him quick wins without focusing on long-term growth like recruiting, which was ‘beneith him’. Let’s just say, even if Coach Butch Jones does well at Cincinnati and takes a job elsewhere, he’s at least building the program the right way and creating great connections between the university and the city.

Big East predictions: Week 2

Your winners- Louisville, North Carolina, Pitt, West Virginia, Syracuse, South Florida, Vanderbilt, and.. wait for it.. CINCINNATI! Did I mention I’ve always been a fan of Andrea Adelson? She pegs this as the Big East game of the week (shown above) and you can’t really blame here. The Tennessee now is not the perennial powerhouse of a few years ago. They’ve got talent but are still rebuilding. The Bearcats have more than a fighting chance in this game.

2011 Big East Positive Impact Factor: Week One

Big East Coast Bias looks at the positive impact factor for the conference last week. Cincinnati came in at the top spot for both offense and defense. It’s not surprising as the Bearcats played a suspect FCS school, put up 72 points, and forced 5 turnovers. Teams like South Florida and Syracuse should rise in the rankings as they are moving from playing BCS schools to FCS schools whereas Cincinnati and Rutgers should go in the opposite direction.

Around the Nation

Bigger Doesn’t Always Mean Better

Good read from Joey Niklas, who advocates for conferences to either stop at 9 or 12 teams. The former because it gives schools an even number of home and away games (4-4) and the latter because it provides the exclusive conference championship. It really doesn’t make much sense for schools to expand beyond 12 as they will have to distribute money to more schools and programs will have a tougher time climbing the ladder in their division as there are more teams to jump. For the Big East (which is now sitting at 9 with TCU), unless the Big XII completely implodes, they should probably stay with 9 and not reach for a conference championship game.

Wait this is fake? Really?! Huh. Well good stuff then!

For NFL players, most challenging ‘season’ just beginning

While NFL players make zillions more than the average Joe like you or me, they also go broke generally much faster because they spend it unwisely. Some also don’t have college degrees as they dropped out early. I find it hard to weep for players making that much money not having the foresight to have a back up plan (like actually GETTING that college degree) in case something went wrong. Regardless, it’s worth a quick glance if anything.
