There’s a saying in college football that speed is bred in Florida and Jones fits that ideom well. He’s quick off the snap, bursting into the backfield at full speed. He seems to surprise both offensive lineman and ball carriers with that speed. I’m particularly impressed with his coverage skills as he moves well in space and understands how to read the quarterbacks eyes to make a break on the ball. This is advantageous against the run as much as it is against the pass and he collapses on sweeps, pitches, and general outside runs very quickly. His size is average for a high schooler but he’s got a good frame and doesn’t mind laying the wood despite being about the same size as the guy he is tackling.
I mentioned earlier how Jones reminds me of Maalik Bomar. I stand by that as both are outside linebackers and are more speed guys who hang their hats on getting to a ball carrier before anyone else. When Jones steps on campus in 2012, Bomar should be his big brother as he can learn a lot from the then-senior. But the new Bearcat will need to take a redshirt as a freshman to bulk up a bit, maybe adding 10 to 15 lbs, to absorb the hits that 210+ lbs running backs will be delivering in college.
