Isaiah Pead Pre-Draft Analysis

The do-it-all runningback from Cincinnati has been drafted by the St. Louis Rams to, well, do-it-all. As expected he was taken by a team that not only could use a new wrinkle out of the backfield but some help on special teams. Pead will backup incumbent, between-the-tackles runningback Steven Jackson but will give the St. Louis offense a lot of options in obvious passing situations. He can swing out and catch the ball on slip screens, run a wheel route down the sidelines, or on draw plays. In essence he gives the Rams options on offense that they didn’t have before, which is what made him such an easy target in the 2nd round.

But St. Louis was also looking for answers in the return game where Isaiah Pead’s amazitude (completely a word) can be utilized. The Rams ranked 20th in kickoff return average yardage but were much better on punt returns (4th in the NFL). Expect the Bearcat runningback to get tried out in those roles. Overall I think Pead will immediately be tabbed as that primary return man and the first player to come in off the bench when Steven Jackson needs a breather. He will essentially become St. Louis’ situational back to pick up long 3rd downs and in constraint plays. But who knows where Isaiah Pead’s career will take him.

Congratulations Pead!
