Canty is a sparkplug with the ball in his hands. Everett seems to play in a wide open spread look very similar to what Rich Rod ran at West Virginia. As such, Canty gets a lot of opportunities to catch the ball in space and make plays for his team. He’s a thickly built player who can evade tackles with ankle-breaking jukes as well as lowering the shoulder and trucking the defender out of the way. On defense Canty brings a physicality to the position that most corners his age need a few years to develop. It’s difficult for wideouts with their long arms to shed press coverage when Canty is regulated to stop them. Even if he does get burnt he has the speed to recover. Canty’s size also helps him in run support because he is able to absorb the blows and not get run over by ball carriers.
This prospect clearly doesn’t need to develop physically but it wouldn’t hurt for Canty to add a few more pounds of muscle in the weight room. But like most high school athletics transitioning to the college game he will be tasked with improving in the film room. It will also be up to the UC coaching staff to find a place for him. I think Canty winds up at cornerback but don’t be surprised if you see him at halfback in dual-RB sets, as a slot receiver, or on kickoff/punt returns. This after he takes a redshirt his freshman year.
