Great win on Friday night. Here are some immediate reactions from around the Internets, But first, highlights!
The Bearcats led 28-20 at halftime, but the defense turned up the heat and blanked Temple out in the second half. UC attacked more against true freshman quarterback P.J. Walker after halftime, and generally contained him from that point. Walker overall was 12-for-22 passing for 200 yards, with two TDs and one interception.
“We tried to blitz him more and play more man (defense), got up more on the receivers,” UC safety Arryn Chenault said. “With a freshman quarterback, he’ll get frustrated. And you see, we got more sacks.”
The important thing is that Cincinnati won. They have the highest home winning percentage in the history of the American. They got win number 4. This isn’t the best of recaps, but it’s midnight on Friday night, what do you really expect. More on Monday.
It wasn’t an Alabama level suffocation, but it was clear from the start of the third quarter that the Owls weren’t going to get it done. Art Kaufman made some great adjustments to shut down some of the misdirection looks that Temple exploited to good effect. In the first half Temple rolled up 271 yards on a little over 8 yards per play. In the second half Temple gained 106 yards, on 26 plays, an average of 4.4 per play.
The Bearcats had their best all-around offensive game, piling up 205 rushing yards while senior quarterback Brendon Kay completed 31 of 37 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns. The defense shutout Temple in the second half as UC improved to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in the AAC.
