In just a short time the Bearcats and Tigers will hit the field. Here’s some links to get you prepared for the game.
From Cincy On The Prowl
The strength of the Memphis Tigers football team is the defense. They’ve held Duke to 28 points (averages 33), Central Florida to 24 points (averages 37), and Houston to 25 points (averages 42). The key is a very stout run defense that’s holding teams to only 99 rushing yards per game.
There are only a few teams in the AAC who are penalized more than Cincinnati and the Tigers are one of them. Memphis averages 8.3 penalties per game and were called for five 15-yard penalties last week against SMU. It’s this aspect of the team where the youth really shows itself. For the Bearcats, this means “messing” with the Tigers on every snap, be it stunting along the defensive line to create confusion on blocking assignments or the receivers chatting up the defensive backs between plays. The Tigers are a fairly undisciplined team and Cincinnati needs to exploit that tonight.
More UC-Memphis Pregame Links
Wednesday marks the 21st meeting all-time between the two squads in a series that dates to 1984. The Tigers lead the all-time series 18-12 and 12-4 in Memphis, but UC has won four of the past five matchups, including three at the Liberty Bowl.
The play of the secondary has allowed the Tigers to approach opposing offenses the same way teams approach their offense, by moving an eighth guy into the box and daring them to win outside. They won those outside match ups against Houston and Central Florida, holding both to season lows in passing yards, and passer rating. At the same time that same approach blew up in their face against SMU as two different Mustangs went over 100 yards receiving.
BOOJ BACK: Senior left guard Austen Bujnoch (Elder HS) is expected to return Wednesday. Bujnoch missed the UConn game Oct. 19 with a foot injury, snapping his streak of 32 consecutive starts.
BEARCATS’ ROAD WOES: While Cincinnati has won four out of the last five games in the Memphis series, including three at the Liberty Bowl, they have struggled on the road this year. Both Bearcat losses – to Illinois and South Florida – were on the road, and their only road win was 14-0 over winless Miami of Ohio.
