The UConn Huskies just knocked off the Kentucky Wildcats 60-54 in a thrilling national championship game. And my god, congratu-effing-lations to those scrappy kids from Storrs! As discussed this morning, it’s not easy rooting for a conference rival in such a big game, watching a team UC plays on a regular basis reach such prestigious heights. There’s a natural “that should have been us” feeling that sweeps through the fanbase as we witness UConn players put on the national champion hats and hoist the title trophy.

Even so, it feels good watching one of our own, an outcast like us if you will, rise above the rest. UConn, like Cincinnati, was cast aside in the latest round of conference realignment and now stands as a national champion. It gives those of us in the red headed stepchild conference we call home something to hang our hats on. Additionally it pumps another $160,000 of NCAA Tournament credits into UC’s budget over the next six years. But that’s besides the point. This is a night for our AAC brethren UConn Huskies. Maybe in a few months we can begin rebuilding our hatred for Connecticut basketball but tonight I feel a need to celebrate with them.

Congrats, UConn! You capped off one hell of a ride.
