In late February, former Cincinnati quarterback Bennie Coney announced he was transferring from the football program. Given his, let’s say, tumultuous first season with Tommy Tuberville and his staff as well as the emergence of Gunner Kiel, this wasn’t all that unexpected. Now, indications based off of several tweets from Coney’s Twitter account suggest he has landed at Eastern Kentucky.

If this is in fact the landing spot for the former UC quarterback, it would make decent sense for him. The Colonels, being at a level below the Bearcats, offer Coney the opportunity to see the field immediately upon transferring rather than sitting out a season had he gone to another FBS program. That’s probably one of the main reasons why Coney didn’t wind up closer to his home in Plant City, Florida (USF, perhaps), as many suspected.

But Coney will have to leapfrog incumbent Jared McClain to see the field in his first year at EKU. The senior quarterback played in all 12 games for the Colonels last season and is a near lock to start for Eastern Kentucky in 2014. For Coney to overtake his QB1 job is easier said than done. So in that respect I’m not so sure EKU is the best fit for him. But there might be other factors at play here that might not be so obvious that influenced Coney’s decision.

Regardless, I wish him the best of luck with the Colonels. He has all the raw abilities to flourish at quarterback at the collegiate level. Coney just needs to learn how to put all of it together.
