2014 NBA Draft: Cincinnati Bearcats Guard Sean Kilpatrick Goes Undrafted

Through two rounds and 60 picks, Cincinnati Bearcats guard Sean Kilpatrick didn’t have his name called during the 2014 NBA Draft. Like the NFL Draft, UC has thrown up a goose egg when it comes to selections for professional teams this year.

It looks like the majority of you were right, Kilpatrick did in fact go undrafted. But I’m a bit torn by this news. On the one hand I’m surprised. As mentioned in his draft profile, Kilpatrick averaged over 21 points per game for Cincinnati last season, leading them to an AAC championship, and showing the world that he has the maturity and skills to carry a team on his back. On the other hand, the UC guard is a volume shooter and a relatively inaccurate one at that. Additionally, his ball handling and defense could use more refinement.

So I can see why some NBA teams shied away from drafting Kilpatrick.

But this isn’t the end for the Cincinnati guard who sits as the second all-time leading scorer in school history. He’ll likely sign with a team as an undrafted free agent which, other than a smaller paycheck, isn’t all that much different from being a second round draft pick. That is where he was projected to go anyways. If Kilpatrick receives a tryout, he could easily show professional coaches the kind of magic UC fans have had the pleasure of witnessing for so many years and earn an NBA or D-League roster spot.

6.27.2014 UPDATE: It looks like that D-League team will be with the Philadelphia 76ers organization.

At the very least it seems he’s extremely motivated.
