Who’s ready for three and a half minutes of Nippert Stadium renovation update fun? Tom Gelehrter and Bob Martin are back to provide us a status of the construction project thru mid-July.

UC football’s new press box continues to slowly and steadily rise into the sky. Last time around the construction crew was building the infrastructure that would actually hold up the enormous building. Now they are finally bringing in the steel that will be the ultimate framework of the press box. This is the phase where most of the heavy lifting will occur as probably millions of pounds of steel will be hoisted into the sky as the transformation from blueprint to a tangible structure takes place.

Stray Observations

  • This is kind of a moot point right now but it’s a shame Cincinnati installed all of that clean, new field turf before last season only to see it covered with a tarp and plywood and have hundreds of tons of equipment and supplies placed on top of it. I’m not sure the kind of wear and tear that will have but it would have been nice if the old turf had lasted just one more season so they wouldn’t hinder the brand new stuff. Oh well, timing has never been on the Bearcats’ side.
  • The “center” core, one of the structures holding up the press box, is nearing completion and the frame holding in the drying concrete and rebar is starting to be removed.
  • The “South” core, the last one to be completed, will be finished by about mid-August. The crew is continuing to work on the West side of the site in a North-to-South pattern.
  • The East concourse design is complete and demolition is set to occur around the beginning of the Fall semester. The plan is to start building this portion up sometime in October.
