18th Crosstown Showdown: Nippert Stadium, Sheakley To Host Several Games

Soon-to-be renovated Nippert Stadium will be on a showcase in the 18th Crosstown Showdown, which pairs several high school teams in the Tri-County area to kick off the football season. You just know how much folks in the Cincy area just love their high school football and I’m sure they’ve been waiting months for this weekend.

It’s also encouraging that UC will get in on the action, as their gem will be in the spotlight for four games against high profile teams in the region.

  • St. Xavier v. Covington Catholic (August 28th, 5:30 pm)
  • Moeller v. Indianapolis Cathedral (August 28th, 8:00 pm)
  • La Salle v. Carmel (August 29th, 6:00 pm)
  • Colerain v. Warren Central (August 29th, 8:30 pm)

St. Xavier, Moeller, and Colerain. There’s your three main powers in Cincinnati. La Salle, another strong program in the region, joins them along with Indianapolis college football factory Warren Central. If UC doesn’t make a strong impression on prospective recruits under the bright and shiny new lights of Nippert Stadium, nothing will.

UC’s done this before, back in 2013 when Nippert Stadium was last operational.I’ve always believed this was an incredibly smart recruiting ploy for the program and added some nice cash flow for the athletic department. Cincinnati was also able to leverage the Sheakley Athletics Center for lower profile games, which they’ll be doing again this year.

  • Summit Country Day v. Purcell Marian (August 26th, 7:00 pm)
  • Reading v. Newport (August 27th, 5:30 pm)
  • Roger Bacon v. Finneytown (August 27th, 8:00 pm)

That’s 7 games featuring 14 high schools, several of which produce Division 1 talent on a regular basis, playing right on UC’s campus. It really doesn’t get much better than that for Tommy Tuberville and crew. They get to scout hundreds of potential future Bearcats by simply looking out their office window.
