The fact that UC expanded Nippert Stadium to 40,000 was certainly encouraging. The added fact that Bearcats fans are flocking to the stadium to see a team that is 3-3, well out of the Access Bowl or AAC Title race, against a 3-4 UConn team on a Saturday afternoon when the weather is expected to be drizzling at best is just icing on the cake.
Listen, opposing fans can say what they will about UC football and Nippert Stadium. That we’re still “small time” haven’t “been there” and that the venue where we watch Bearcats football is “MAC level” but you can’t deny the passion of these fans. The students of course always pack the South end zone but with the renovations regular fans are also packing the 40,000-seat stadium to ensure it’s as intimidating an environment as possible.
I’m sure the Miami Hurricanes can attest to that.
Also, while only a small piece to the conference realignment puzzle, getting sell outs like these in spite of the team’s record or postseason hopes, which look mid-tier bowl at this point, is the perfect posturing for UC when making a case to the Big 12 or ACC. There are of course several other factors at play but this is yet another feather in Cincinnati’s cap. In general, consistent fan support like this is only a good thing for Bearcats football regardless what conference they are playing in now or in ten years.
