Cincinnati and Lakota West’s own, Collin Shaw, is lighting up the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. After dominating in his first six collegiate starts, this 6’6″ Freshman has been turning some MLB scouts’ heads while playing with the Hamilton Joes this summer.

Source: Facebook

The Joes have been using him strictly from the bullpen and in six games so far this summer, Shaw has posted a 2.70 ERA while striking out 11 batters.

In one of his best appearances of the summer, Shaw went 2 and 2/3 innings, without giving up a hit in 10 batters while striking out four.

Consistently reaching 90-93 MPH with his fastball, Collin has scouts feeling that his potential is through the roof and that with a few more seasons of growth, we could hear Collin Shaw’s name being called on Draft Day.

The Hamilton Joes conclude their season in Xenia tomorrow against the Scouts at Grady Field, Xenia Ohio. Follow the pitch by pitch action on the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League website starting at 7pm.

Former University of Cincinnati President, Nancy Zimpher came in gun slinging, in order to get the academics, especially in the Athletic Department, back on track. We all agree that what happened to Bob Huggins was clearly wrong. I had no objection to the firing, but don’t allow the man to recruit and get a team together and then right before the season starts fire him. That’s ridiculous. What has happened however, is a 180 degree turn in academics which she instilled back into the program.

This is a letter that was posted in the President’s Column during Zimpher’s time as UC’s President.

http://magazine.uc.edu/issues/0805/corevalues.html

UC placed 218 student-athletes on the 2011 Big East Conference Academic All-Star Team. which is an increase from the 184 UC student-athletes named to the 2010 academic all-star team. A total of 10 UC programs achieved double digit counts on the team, including every student-athlete on both the men’s cross country (14) and women’s golf teams (11).

The UC football team placed a league-high 19 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big East Team and earlier this week, the football team was honored with Big East Team Excellence Award for having the highest team GPA among competing conference schools.

I feel that we should all applaud the UC Bearcat student-athletes for their efforts in not only putting UC back on the map athletically, but academically as well.

The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics, in conjunction with UCATS and the 1200 Club, announced Monday the creation of the Gridiron Tailgate on Campus Green.

The GRID, a new and unique on campus tailgating opportunity, will make its debut prior to the Bearcats 2011 football season opener against Austin Peay at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011.

The GRID is made up of 100 tailgating plots stretched across Campus Green giving fans the chance to bring their pre-game parties to the heart of campus. The 1200 Club is determined to develop the pre-game culture of Bearcats Football and create the best possible gameday atmosphere for the fans and for the football team as they step off the bus for the CATWALK through campus.

Plots will be sold on a season-long basis for a flat rate of $150. Each plot size will average 20′ x 16′ and are only valid for games at Nippert Stadium. Paul Brown Stadium tailgating options will be announced at a later date.

All plot requests must be received by Friday, Aug. 12.

The GRID holds 100 spaces. Spaces will be allocated first to interested George D. Smith Society and 1200 Club members. All additional spaces will be awarded according to UCATS giving level and then priority points within.

Drop-off zones allow plot holders the ability to conveniently unload their tailgating supplies near the site. (View The GRID Guide for locations)

Plot holders may bring their own food, beverages and tailgating supplies including grills, coolers, tables, chairs and small tents. Alcohol is permitted; no glass bottles or cans. Cups are acceptable. Food and beverage vendors will also be on site.

The GRID has partnered with All-American Rentals for those who would like to rent supplies. All-American Rentals can conveniently provide tents, grills, tables, chairs and coolers for your party. They can be contacted after the allocation of the spaces at 513-521-6500.

The GRID opens four hours prior to the scheduled game time and will re-open for one additional hour after the conclusion of the game.

The area will close 30 minutes prior to kickoff and patrons must vacate the area during the game. Tailgate equipment may be left at your space during the game as security will remain on hand.

Fans that do not have a reserved space inside the GRID are welcome to visit the GRID’s Open Access Area. This free area allows the placement of coolers and chairs, but grilling is not permitted.

For additional information, including rules and regulations pertaining to the Gridiron Tailgate, please view the GRID guide by clicking HERE.

For any additional questions about the GRID, please contact Keith Pantling at keith.pantling@uc.edu.

Headlines: “NFL Owners approve new CBA… NFLPA mulling options, won’t vote on owner approved new CBA.”

Let me get this straight… a $10 billion juggernaut business and you are whining over a few percentage points. Regardless of a few scandals here and there, college players play for their tuition, room and board, books and their meal plan. With the amount of money that the NCAA brings in on football alone, college players play for free essentially.

With rules that don’t allow players the right to a job while they are at college, players don’t have the means to take out their girlfriend or grab pizza with the guys. I’m not saying we should start paying college players because that is a can of worms that should never be opened… what i’m saying is that these NFL players and owners need to get over their own egos and bring back America’s most popular sport.

College players play for the pride of their schools and screaming college buddies and now it seems that all these NFL players play for are the Mr. Benjamins lining their wallets. NFL stadiums needs to be filled with fans that work overtime in order to get their season tickets and in the midst of this economic meltdown, Americans need something to cheer for.

If you won’t do any favors for eachother, then do a favor for us… the fans… the people that cheer you on and pay your bills! Get off your high horses, sign the CBA and get back out there. If not, you will lose our trust and you will destroy the new American Pastime – NFL Football.

After writing a few days ago about the Bob Huggins led 1991 Final Four Bearcats team, I began to think about how much I missed Huggie Bear. The firestorm of a coach that tormented offenses with his relentless, full court pressure schemes. Don’t get me wrong, UC is definitely on the upswing with current coach Mick Cronin and I’m looking forward to many years of successful seasons but I feel at times there is just something missing… and that something is Bob Huggins.

This year marks the 20 year anniversary of that unbelievable run that ended at the hands of the tainted 1991 Michigan Fab Four team. Led by Nick Van Exel, Erik Martin, Terrance Gibson, Terry “The Flop” Nelson, Corey Blount, Curtis Bostic – who looked more like a body builder than a basketball player, and John Jacobs, the Bearcats made an improbable run as the #4 seed. During the run, the Bearcats beat the “Penny” Hardaway led Memphis Tigers for the fourth time that season.

Another great memory is the Great Alaska Shootout game against #1 ranked Duke. I listened to the play by play of this game on the radio with my father until 1 or 2 in the morning on 700 WLW. A back and forth game from start to finish which after William Avery tied the game at 75 all came down to one play. Ryan Fletcher hit Kenyon Martin with a long baseball pass, and Melvin Levett took Martin’s pass in stride as he raced toward the basket for the game-winning dunk. My dad and I went crazy. Those are the moments I will never forgot for the rest of my life.

Huggins went 399-127 in 16 seasons at Cincinnati, rebuilding it into a nationally prominent program after years in disarray. His teams made 14 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

In 2005, some off court issues and a fire squad led by former University of Cincinnati President Nancy Zimpher, forced Bob Huggins to resign as Head Coach of the Bearcats. After 16 years, Zimpher enforced her power like a tyrant, leaving the program in shambles.

The fire that Bob Huggins had on the sideline, whether it was ripping his players for not playing up to their potential or a referee for a bad call, his emotion showed the passion and love that he had for the University of Cincinnati and the game of basketball. I have missed Huggie Bear and although I am very happy for his current success at West Virginia, I wish he was still the Head Basketball Coach for our UC Bearcats.

Coming into Thursday, September 22nd at 8:00pm, I believe the Bearcats will be 3-0. With the whole nation watching the ESPN Thursday Night Game, the Wolfpack of North Carolina State will come to Nippert Stadium looking to knock off a rejuvenated Bearcats team.

Last season, the Wolfpack blew out Cincinnati 30-19 in Raleigh while piling up nearly 500 yards of offense. Wolfpack quarterback Russell Wilson accounted for over 350 yards of offense alone as he threw for 333 yards and 3 touchdowns. With the game in hand at 30-7, Cincinnati scored a couple of late TDs to make the game seem reasonable. The Bearcats did not move the ball inside N.C. State’s 30 yard line until the last 6 minutes of the game.

Good news Bearcats’ fans, we are in luck… after compiling 3,288 passing yards to go along with 26 Touchdowns and leading the Wolfpack to a 9-4 record, Russell Wilson decided to transfer to Wisconsin to play his senior season. Stepping in will be Mike Glennon, who has 326 yards passing for his career.

In order for the Bearcats to pull off this upset, they will need to be in the face of Glennon all day and disrupt any confidence that this young quarterback has.

On the defensive side, the Wolfpack have returned half of its starters, and after peppering Collaros all afternoon last year, the Bearcats will need to establish a running game early in order to bring up the talented N.C. State secondary. If Isaiah Pead and the offensive line can get something going, the Bearcats can send home the Wolfpack with a loss.

With a young quarterback at the helm for N.C. State in front of a loud Thursday night crowd at Nippert Stadium, I believe the Bearcats will start out the 2011 season, 4-0.

My prediction – Bearcats 27 – Wolfpack 20
