Expanding ACC will reopen ESPN deal
Well there’s your reason for expansion. Under a clause in the original contract the ACC or ESPN could reopen the deal if the conference expanded by at least two teams. Thus the Pitt and Syracuse additions allow for the ACC to renegotiate their pretty subpar deal. They were getting outpaced by the other conferences (including the Big East before conference realignment) and were locked into the deal for basically another decade.
