It was
reported earlier today by Mike Dyer
, who always seems to be on top of this, that Cincinnati’s 2012 class got a boost by adding DeShawn Dowdy. He had been a verbal commitment to the Maryland Terapins but pulled his pledge a couple of weeks ago. I can’t confirm this as fact but in all likelihood, the Terps’ 2 – 10 record along with all of the animosity between coach Randy Edsall and his team probably had something to do with it. Oh well. What’s there is loss is Cincinnati’s gain, and he is now a verbal to the Bearcats.
Overview
The scouting ranks don’t give Dowdy much love but I’m intrigued by his size. He is a big wide receiver at around 6’4″, 220 lbs. In high school he creates a physical mismatch with opposing defensive backs who average around 5’9″ and 5’10” tall. He does a nice job shielding himself from the defender and is a load to bring down. He also appears to play some defensive end in high school and has a solid burst off the edge with good speed to chase down the ball carrier. Dowdy is definitely a welcome addition to the Bearcats’ 2012 class
Outlook
Dowdy is a WR in high school but projects to a tight end or defensive end in college. His size is solid for high school competition but he will be eaten up by opposing defensive backs because of his speed at the next level. In all honesty, this works out perfectly for the Bearcats who are looking for a tight end in this class. Dowdy fits the mold well and while I’m not sure he slides to defensive end, I’m almost positive he’ll take a redshirt as a freshman simply because Blake Annen and Travis Kelce will be ahead of him on the depth chart.
