Bearcat Lair was the first to break the story but it appears the University of Cincinnati and Head Football Coach Butch Jones have agreed to a six-year extension. Since head coaches around college football started dropping like flies around the end of November, Jones began to pop up on a list of lead candidates for those gigs, including Illinois and North Carolina. Tensions were high among Bearcats fans as there was a threat of them losing their young head coach to a more established program in a bigger conference, again. Even though it was a long shot for Jones to land at either of those schools, there was still an aura of concern in Bearcats nation with the way Brian Kelly and to a lesser extent Mark Dantonio had ran for ‘greener pastures’.

If Coach Jones continues to be successful at Cincinnati, he will always garner interest from programs around college football. That’s just the nature of the coaching carousel at this level and, quite frankly, the life of a Bearcats fan in December. But Jones has expressed interest in staying in the Queen City long-term and while those are just words at this point, this contract extension is a step in the right direction to taking Bearcats football to the next level.
