There hasn’t been a lot to get excited about with UC’s women’s basketball team this year but one bright spot came in the form of an amazing series of plays from Bjonee Reaves’ against Syracuse last Saturday. Down one with just seconds left, she stole the ball (one of four steals) and made a jumper as time ticked away to give the Bearcats a 55 – 54 win over the Orange. Not only that but Reaves contributed with 11 points en route to UC’s first Big East win of the year. Her performance earned Reaves a spot on the Big East honor roll this past week and the momentum from her shot in the final seconds against Syracuse propelled the Lady Bearcats to a statement win over the Marquette Golden Eagles. Reaves scored 18 points in that game as she and Dayeesha Hollins led the way to two-straight Big East wins.
Head coach Jamelle Elliott is experiencing growing pains with her team that is comprised of mainly freshman and sophomores. Reaves is one of just two seniors on the Lady Bearcats. She is setting the example for the younger players to follow in her footsteps and build off of wins like these.
