2013 was bound to be a guard-heavy class with Cashmere Wright and Jaquon Parker graduating after the upcoming season. Virginia guard Troy Caupain kicked things off on Friday and local prospect Kevin Johnson kept the ball rolling today. The point guard from Summit Country Day school opted for the hometown Bearcats despite visiting Butler this past weekend. He also garnered offers from solid programs such as Xavier, Minnesota, Seton Hall, Creighton, and Davidson among others. Another important aspect of his commitment is that he plays for the AAU team the Ohio Basketball Club which has hosted some of the best talent from the state of Ohio. The fact that UC was able to secure a commitment from a player from this program could open up doors later on down the line.

Johnson is an aggressive guard who has a nose for the rim and the moves to get there. He not only has quick feet that continue to churn but has a nice handle and knows when to tuck it away before putting up a shot. When he drives the lane he does so with force that seems to surprise defenders. This is one of the most encouraging features of his game because he doesn’t have a problem drawing fouls and shooting from the stripe. He also distributes the ball well making sure that open players have an opportunity to shoot, which is what they should do when they are open. Combining his driving ability and passing skills makes him a tough player to defend. Speaking of defense, Johnson is strong in this area of his game with his quick hands. He’s a very polished recruit that’s for sure.

Outlook

At this point I could just as easily see Johnson staying at shooting guard while with the Bearcats or competing with Troy Caupain for the starting point guard role. Neither move would surprise me and I trust Mick Cronin to place him where he will succeed. His passing abilities and defense could make him the ideal fit to run the offense from the top of the key but it’s too early to tell where he will end up at this point.
