Sunday Funday!

Scout has reported this afternoon that Arkansas wide receiver MeKale McKay will transfer to Cincinnati. It seems UC’s staff was quick to add the former Razorback as Bret Bielema granted him a release from his scholarship just this weekend. Less than a day later, McKay announced he will join the Bearcats.

This is a major coup for Tommy Tuberville and his staff. McKay clocks in at 6’6″ 195 lbs and supposedly runs a sub-4.6 Forty. Those are NFL-type measurables. Per the Scout article, McKay is looking to avoid sitting out the 2013 season by filing a hardship waiver with the NCAA. He would then become eligible to see the field in the upcoming season. If so, I could see McKay inserted into the offense right away. Sure he would have deal with the learning curve from adjusting to a new playbook but this kid is an athletic freak with an almost limitless ceiling. I’d be shocked if he didn’t at least show up somewhere on the two-deep by the season opener against the Purdue Boilermakers.

If not, expect Tuberville to slap a redshirt on McKay this season to allow him to have three more years of eligibility beginning in 2014. At that point, with a year of studying the playbook under his belt, he could easily become Cincinnati’s #1 receiver that year. Either way McKay is going to see the field at some point and I’m sure will look stunning in red and black. Transfers have been a mixed bag for UC recently, especially at wide receiver, but if he can remain healthy he can really make an impact with the Bearcats in the coming years.
