Amidst the hirings and firings that have occurred at Cincinnati over the past couple of weeks, one name that hasn’t been tossed around as much is Eddie Gran. The UC offensive coordinator was a hot commodity near the end of the college football season, garnering interviews at Florida Atlantic and rumored to have interest from Arkansas State. But since the turn of the new year, the trail has gone cold on the Gran front.
Until now.
According to All Alabama, the UC offensive coordinator is interviewing for the open UAB head coaching position. This was of course left vacant after former Blazers coach Garrick McGee joined Bobby Petrino’s staff in Louisville to serve as the Cardinals’ offensive coordinator. Given Gran’s recruiting connections in the South, this move makes sense for both parties. Whether he can become successful as a head coach remains to be seen.
For the Bearcats, if Gran does wind up winning the job and leaving Cincinnati, expect Tommy Tuberville to promote quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw to offensive coordinator. The young coach did a nice job with Brendon Kay in 2013 as the offense transitioned to a spread system. Hinshaw is also a star in the making and will probably become an offensive coordinator sometime in the next couple of years whether it be at UC or some place else. So why not keep him on the staff?
