The American Athletic Conference’s East-West divisional split has been leaked and Cincinnati will be in the East. The full breakout of the AAC’s new divisions are below.

EAST

  • Cincinnati
  • UConn
  • USF
  • UCF
  • Temple
  • East Carolina

WEST

  • Tulane
  • Tulsa
  • SMU
  • Houston
  • Memphis
  • Navy

For perhaps the first time, a conference-wide decision by the higher ups in the AAC actually makes logical sense. At least for Cincinnati, anyways (I hope you’ve built up some frequent flyer miles, Navy). UC is situated in a division with decent geographical proximity to their divisional rivals. The furthest trips would be South Florida or Central Florida and the Bearcats would likely only make them once a season.

Additionally, on the surface these divisions look fairly balanced. Cincinnati, UCF, and East Carolina look like title game contenders out of the East with SMU and Houston emerging out of the West. You could also make the argument for Navy and Tulsa here in any given season. Right now I’d give the slight edge in strength to the East but the West certainly has some burgeoning teams. Overall it’s a solid split of the conference’s football teams that I don’t think many will gripe about.

An official announcement is expected on Friday.
