The Cincinnati Bearcats signed Northwest Florida State transfer Farad Cobb, adding him to their 2014 class. Now he’s let the world know via his Instagram that he’s officially a UC student athlete, according to his new student ID card.
It was basically assured that Cobb was going to be wearing red and black this fall but it doesn’t hurt to see the the young man get an official item of proof of his enrollment.
The transfer could be a critical cog next season for the Bearcats. Cincinnati was starving for a consistent second scorer to take the pressure off of Sean Kilpatrick last season. Justin Jackson did what he could in the low post when he wasn’t fighting foul trouble and Troy Caupain looked promising in spurts but hit a wall when conference play came around. UC will be in a more desperate situation next year with Kilpatrick long gone.
The hope is fresh blood joining Caupain and Kevin Johnson will boost Cincinnati’s offense in 2014-15. At guard in particular prolific high school scorer Deshaun Morman will be eligible off his redshirt year and Farad Cobb is joining the team. Essentially Mick is loading his back court with players who are adept at putting the ball in the basket to improve production from that position next year. It’s a simple numbers game that will hopefully pay dividends this fall.
Cobb in particular was outstanding at point guard for Northwest Florida State. The sophomore averaged 15.1 points per game for the Raiders. Most spectacularly, Cobb shot 51% from the field and a demigod-like 46% from three. If he can transfer even a portion of those averages to Cincinnati, the Bearcats could be assured one of the most dangerous back courts we’ve witnessed at UC in the Mick Cronin era.
