The Cincinnati Bearcats will be heading to the Caribbean in August as a prep for their 2014-15 basketball season. According to a recently published article on ESPN, UC will travel to the Bahamas to face the PJ Stingers in an exhibition game at 7 pm on August 15th.

If you’ve never heard of the Stingers, don’t feel bad. Neither did I. A quick Google search reveals very little but what we have found is that they are members of the New Plymouth Basketball Association, whose website looks like it was built on the geocities platform. The Stingers participated in the same foreign tour for several domestic teams last year and were pummeled by Manhattan College 116-72 and Bradley 96-70. They have gone 11-4 in 2014, good for second in the John Archer division and third in the NPBA standings.

I don’t think the Bearcats will face much of a challenge in the Stingers but traveling out of the country will allow this young team with new players all over the place the chance to grow into a cohesive unit. Instead of spending time in separate dorm rooms and taking on exhibition teams at Fifth Third Arena, Cincinnati will spend several days together in airports, planes, and a hotel. It will also give the players a taste of an unfamiliar environment, forcing them to adapt to a new arena. Those, I believe, are the most important aspects of this foreign tour for the Bearcats and hopefully they return to the states as a better basketball team because of it.
