What has been effectively under-the-radar news for the last month is now picking up steam.

On May 26th, MetroNews in West Virginia reported that Mountaineers linebacker Davonte James, disheartened with his move to defensive end, sought his release from the football program. After three weeks of silence, word has gotten out that James has been permitted to transfer from WVU.

Coming out of high school as a member of the 2014 recruiting class, the linebacker from Springfield, Ohio was a high 3-star prospect with offers from West Virginia, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Illinois and Cincinnati. That last one is key. Ever since news leaked that he was seeking a transfer, it’s been reported that James has had eyes for the Bearcats ever since.

The move would make sense for both parties. For UC, they would get a talented player to backfill graduating seniors Jeff Luc, Solomon Tentman, Nick Temple, and Clemente Casseus. After sitting out a year to learn the system, per NCAA transfer rules, James would be available in 2015 and could earn a starting position right away. For the former WVU linebacker, he would have a strong opportunity to play the position he desires and close to his hometown in Springfield, no less. It’s a win-win for both Cincinnati and James.

Hopefully this comes to fruition.
