4) Runningback – Hosey Williams
The junior college transfer was Cincinnati’s lone bright spot at runningback in 2013. Tasked with replacing the nearly untackleable (word?) George Winn following the 2012 season, Tuberville and Gran opted to go with a runningback by committee approach last season. It had varying results.
Tion Green, despite his size and raw abilities, struggled with technique and pass protection. Ralph David Abernathy, despite his understanding of the intricacies of the position and unbelievable athleticism, was too small to sustain the pounding he took to continuously running the ball up the middle. The happy medium was junior Hosey Williams. At 5’9″, 199 lbs, he was large enough to drive the ball between the tackles successfully and experienced enough to to the little things right.
So as we head into 2014, Ralph David Abernathy has been given more reps at wide receiver, handing his carries to Williams and Green. Given their respective histories at the position, the former will probably be given the major of the reps next season.
