Cincinnati Bearcats Scrimmage, Training Camp News & Notes
By Chris Bains
The Cincinnati Bearcats have spent the last few days in full pads during training camp at Higher Ground in West Harrison, Indiana. Intensity has certainly turned up since Friday and all of it culminated in a scrimmage the team held at Paul Brown Stadium earlier today. Unfortunately it was closed to the public, as are all scrimmages during camp, but luckily several media members were around to provide several updates on the team as they were for Friday and Saturday’s practice sessions.
The major nuggets from the scrimmage, for your amusement.
- Mike Golic, father of Bearcats tight end Jake Golic, watched the scrimmage today and has been hanging around the team. It goes without saying that a lot of people are freaking out over it.
- The offense appears to have caught up to the defense today as multiple quarterbacks and receivers connected for touchdowns.
- Speaking of quarterbacks, Tommy Tuberville refuses to name a starter. We’ll have more on this later today but everybody and their mother knows Gunner Kiel is the guy.
Also, news and notes from the most recent practices.
- Transfer from the Land Down Under, Lindsay Crook, broke his wrist and EJ Junior has a nagging tibia injury. It’s a damn shame about Crook especially considering it seems like he’s had the Brendon Kay experience since joining the Bearcats, in that he’s been injured every year at UC. Luckily both he and Junior are expected to be back fully healthy in a few weeks.
- Tommy Tuberville continues to go full-Butch Jones in naming-not-naming Gunner Kiel his starting quarterback. Keep filtering out the coach speak, folks, Kiel’s our man.
- Wide receiver Alex Chisum appears to be back to 100% after missing all of last season with an injury. He caught two touchdown passes on Friday from Munchie Legaux.
And, of course, post scrimmage and practice interviews. First up is the big man himself.
Then cornerbacks coach Steve Clinkscale.
