3) Hi, Mike!
Mike Boone was an unknown commodity coming into the 2014 season. A speedy wide receiver in high school, Tommy Tuberville and his offensive coaches opted to move him to running back when he signed his letter of intent with the Bearcats.
Boy was it ever the best move they’ve ever made.
With starter Hosey Williams and immediate backup Tion Green out with injuries against South Florida, the Bearcats leaned on their third string running back Rod Moore and true freshman Mike Boone. The latter did more than just keep the ship afloat, he steered Cincinnati’s running game through the rough waters and carried them to victory.
Boone stampeded for 221 yards and a touchdown against the Bulls. Had he not fumbled the ball at the goal line, he would have had two touchdowns. His 221 yards on the day were the most since Isaiah Pead sliced and diced Rutgers’ defense to bits in 2010. While Eddie Gran refused to start him in any game thereafter, Boone still split time with Rod Moore and should be a front runner to earn an expanded role in 2015. If he does wind up starting this season we may have witnessed the coming out party for Boone way back in October of last year.
