4) The Losing Streak
Three games, 1,941 yards, 146 points, and 17 touchdowns. That was the misery that we as fans endured from late September to mid-October when Hank Hughes’ defense couldn’t stop anything. It got so bad that I was calling for his head before UC hit the meat of their AAC schedule.
Perhaps the most heart breaking part of the losing streak was that it shocked Bearcats fans. First of all, their head coach was portrayed as one of the best defensive minds in the last generation. To give up those kind of numbers was unbelievable and I couldn’t understand why he stood by his defensive coordinator through all of that.
Plus, even though the secondary was in a bit of a rebuilding year, the front seven was chock full of talent, from Silverberry Mouhon and Brad Harrah along the line to Jeff Luc and Nick Temple at linebacker. So it wasn’t like the transition from 2008 to 2009 or 2009 to 2010. UC probably had as much talent defensively last season as they’ve had on average in the last decade. But for whatever reason they weren’t performing at nearly their capabilities and it cost the Bearcats a chance a potentially special season.
