College Football: Week 1 Impressions
Non-Bearcat News
You’ve got to love the drama of week 1 in college football. Week 1 doesn’t mean everything and its a good thing because there are always some bad losses in the first week. A few teams always have trouble shaking off the cobwebs from training camp and among them this year were:
- No. 21 Stanford losing to unranked Northwestern (although Northwestern will probably be a good team this season).
- Penn State losing to Temple for the first time in 74 years (look out Bearcats).
- Nebraska losing at home to BYU (look out again Bearcats).
- Indiana held on for dear life to fend off Southern Illinois’ two point conversion.
- Kansas fell to South Dakota State (if the B12 needs to bolsters its conference then we should talk).
- Western Kentucky takes down SEC Vanderbilt.
- Kentucky had trouble finishing off Louisiana-Layfayette (perhaps this answers their questions, “why not?“)
- Our own UCF loses to Florida International (no comment).
- The AAC’s Tulsa went to overtime with Flordia Atlantic.
- And ECU was probably a little closer than comfortable to Towson in the final score.
Our Bearcats
Meanwhile, our Bearcats came out sharp (for a drive anyway). The first quarter looked a little rough on offense, the second looked a little rough on defense. Luckily we scheduled wisely and were able to absorb the damage of a Kiel fumble and the defense giving up a couple of medium-long passes. Overall the team looked pretty good and it looks like our offense will live up to the hype. Our defense seems to be more athletic than it has been in years and that is a good thing given last year’d headaches. To further help the defense, our 3 running backs totaled for over 300 yards rushing. That should help the defense more than anything. The quick strike capability is very nice, but we’ll want to control the time of possession this year and it looks like we’ll do just that.
Heading into week 2 it looks like our biggest decision will be, “which 100 yd rusher gets the ball first?”
