Collaborative Predictions: Cincinnati vs. UConn

This year’s team seems predictably unpredictable, yet here we are again offering our best predictions:

Chris Bains

UC is working on a five-game winning streak against the Huskies, one that should come to fruition on Saturday. UConn is better this season, in that they aren’t dumpster fire-esque like in years past. The defense is solid, they tend to create interceptions, and they can actually pass the ball this year. I don’t think the Bearcats win this game handily, they never seem to this season, but Cincinnati still comes out on top.

UConn has improved a ton from what they were during the last few years, but the Huskies’ offense still isn’t scoring enough to beat teams from the top half of The American.  UConn hung 40 on lowly UCF, but they’re averaging just 16.5 points per game against everyone else – there’s just no way the can keep up with UC.  The Huskies are particularly vulnerable to the run, allowing three 100-yard rushers and another to go for 95.  If Boone, Green, and Williams get going, it’s going to be a long day for Bob Diaco’s crew.  Also, I’m interested to see if this is the time for Gunner to get his job back.  UC has back-to-back home games that are as close to cupcakes in league play as you can get.  Maybe now is the time to ease him back in and get him some confidence.

Cincinnati makes a very loud and clear statement on Saturday.

UC returns to Nippert to face UCONN after a disaster second half at BYU. UCONN finally has an offense that can move the ball down the field, but I expect the coaching staff to call more blitzes in order to get pressure on the QB. Also, after only have 6 rushing plays in the second half against BYU, I hope the running backs get more touches especially Mike Boone. I expect an offensive show from the Bearcats on homecoming. However, the secondary will still never turn the heads to look at the ball so just get used to it Bearcats fans.

Everything in me says that this game is a no-brainer although UConn is much improved and Cincinnati’s offense is painfully inconsistent and seemingly unable to execute in the red zone.  I think Gunner deserves the start tomorrow and I hope he comes out angry and focused from having lost the coach and fan support.  If Eddie Gran can break the trend and make in-game adjustments then our offense should be able to hang some points on UConn’s defense.  If our defense plays an average game then we should be able to win.  These next two games are absolute must-wins for the Bearcats bowl chances.  If we’re able to win our next two home games (facing opponents with a combined record of 3-11) then we’ll be one win away from a bowl game and the season will not be a total bust… and for Pete’s sake, GIVE BOONE THE BALL!

There you have it, our optimism may be wavering but we all still believe that this team has what it takes to win.
