Cincinnati Recruiting: Linebacker Ty Sponseller Signs With The UC Bearcats

Three-star linebacker Ty Sponseller has officially signed with the Cincinnati Bearcats for their 2016 recruiting class on National Signing Day.

OVERVIEW

Sponseller’s long legs allow him to reach his top speed seemingly effortlessly. I’m extremely impressed with his ability to get to the ball carrier or a pass quickly. Sponseller does a nice job understanding the play, tracking the quarterback’s eyes while maintaining focus on the receivers nearby, then jumping all over the pass. Plus his tackling instincts are top notch. He targets the midsection on tackles, plowing through a defender rather than using his arms to wrap up the legs or upper body. It prevents the ball carrier from escaping him easily and more often than not is brought to the ground. Overall, Sponseller is yet another solid addition to Cincinnati’s 2016 recruiting class.

OUTLOOK

He’ll redshirt as a freshman in 2016. If the coaches intend to move Sponseller to outside linebacker he’ll take that year “off” to tack on weight in UCs strength and nutrition program. If they opt to keep in him the defensive backfield, he’ll be tasked at adding some weight but generally focus on understanding the nuances of the position (breaking down offensive schemes on the fly, read-react skills, etc.) In any case, again, Sponseller will take a redshirt his first year on campus. But after that season he could very easily plugged into the depth chart before he’s an upperclassman at Cincinnati.
