Cincinnati was hoping to celebrate Senior Day with a series-clinching win over conference rival Memphis on Sunday but the team was never able to find a rhythm. After allowing two runs in two innings, starting pitcher Tristan Weaver was pulled and the Bearcats bullpen couldn’t contain the Tigers offense in a disappointing 13-1 loss.

Memphis had multiple scoring opportunities early on but an outstanding play from Bearcats third baseman Dondrae Bremner kept the deficit at 1-0 in the second inning. Sophomore right hander Zach Segal replaced Weaver in the top of the third inning and proceeded to give up a bases-clearing double to break the game open.

Blake Daniels ripped a double to right field to put the Tigers up 5-0 in the third inning. The Bearcats offense brought in its only run of the game in the fourth inning as Griffin Merritt drew a bases loaded walk to score Bremner. Memphis responded quickly with four runs in the next two frames to put the score out of reach.

Bremner had a chance to get a few runs back with the bases loaded but he struck out looking to end the sixth inning as the Bearcats trailed 10-1. All six relief pitchers allowed at least one run as the Cincinnati bullpen struggled to execute on Senior Day. Memphis added three more runs in the seventh inning to push the lead to 13-1.

Wyatt Stapp led the team with two hits in the loss, while Kerrington Cross and Joe Powell also picked up base hits for the Bearcats. Weaver has been the best starting pitcher on the team for most of the season but he is extremely inconsistent and that was on full display as Cincinnati fell in the home finale.

The Bearcats will look to bounce back on Tuesday night at Ohio State before traveling to Orlando for a 3-game series against Central Florida next weekend. Following the loss to Memphis, Cincinnati slipped to fifth place in the AAC with just over a week until the conference tournament begins on May 24.
