Ethan Wright was reportedly in the mix to become the Bearcats new starting running back before recently making the move to safety as training camp started. After playing in 20 games over the last two seasons, Wright will get a chance to line up on defense and possibly carve out a significant role in the secondary.

"Luke Fickell discussed Wright’s position change per the Bearcat Journal: “I think in the long run it’s going to be the best for him. He reminds me of Bryan Cook. Wright hasn’t been over there a bunch but his versatility gives him a lot of opportunities. I think in the long run, it’s the best position for him.”"

The Akron native appeared in 13 games last season, racking up 342 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns on 29 carries including a 58-yard touchdown return in a win against Temple. During his freshman campaign, Wright compiled 21 yards and two receptions to go with two tackles on special teams.

Before committing to the Bearcats, Wright was one of the most prolific rushers in Ohio as a senior at Manchester High School. In addition to recording the fourth most rushing yards (7,804) in Ohio high school history, Wright played defensive back and linebacker, totaling 404 tackles, seven interceptions and seven sacks.

"Fickell also remembered a recent moment with Wright via the Bearcat Journal: “Obviously the most important thing is the team and there’s no greater team guy than Ethan Wright. He was walking out last night and said ‘Coach do you want me to do anything else? Just let me know, I’ll do whatever you need for the team.’”"

Wright will have to compete for snaps alongside a relatively strong secondary. Ja’von Hicks and Arquon Bush will lead the way, while Ja’quan Sheppard is expected to start at boundary cornerback with true freshman JQ Hardaway looking to make an instant impact. Sammy Anderson Jr, Todd Bumphis and Justin Harris will also see the field consistently.
