Arkansas took a crucial step forward last season and quarterback KJ Jefferson was arguably the biggest reason. In the season opener on Saturday afternoon, Cincinnati must be able to contain Jefferson from consistently creating big plays.

After such a successful sophomore campaign, Jefferson will be looking to start his junior season with another dominant performance. He was the first Arkansas quarterback to have multiple games with at least two rushing touchdowns since 1997.

Jefferson finished with 2,676 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and four interceptions on a 67.3% completion rate, while racking up 664 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 146 carries (4.5 yards per attempt) in 13 appearances last season.

The junior quarterback ranked sixth in the SEC with 256.9 total yards per game en route to winning the 2022 Outback Bowl MVP. It’s not going to be easy to keep Jefferson in check so Cincinnati’s defense will have to stay aggressive and disciplined.

Luke Fickell recently talked about containing Jefferson per Cincinnati Athletics.

"β€œIt’s hard to simulate a 6’4, 245-pound guy running downhill as a quarterback. You just have to be prepared well and tackle physically on a consistent basis. He is very dynamic at what he does, can throw the ball and is getting better and better.”"

In addition to being a physically imposing force under center, Jefferson is an intelligent decision maker. He finished last season as one of five quarterbacks in the entire country with more than 20 touchdown passes and less than five interceptions.

Jefferson only threw four interceptions last year and completed 171 straight passes without throwing a pick, which was the second longest streak in program history. If the Bearcats can force a turnover, it could be the difference on Saturday night.

Fickell later discussed the Razorbacks rushing attack via Cincinnati Athletics.

"β€œThe unique thing about quarterbacks that are able to run downhill is they put a lot of pressure on defenses. Whatever they line up in front of you is what you have to be prepared for. I know these guys are ready and it’s a great opportunity for us.”"
