Kennesaw State runs a triple option offense with quarterback Xavier Shepherd and running back Preston Daniels leading the charge. Several other ball carriers will get a chance to play against the Bearcats but Shepherd is the driving force.
Even though Kennesaw State’s offense struggled to move the ball against Samford, the Nashville native isn’t afraid to take chances down field. Shepherd broke the program-record with four passing touchdowns on two different occasions last year.
In the season opener a week ago, Shepherd threw for 135 passing yards and one interception on 13 attempts. On the ground, the junior quarterback racked up 64 rushing yards and one touchdown on 35 carries in the 27-17 loss at Samford.
Shepherd is the main contributor but Daniels is another player that could create problems for the Bearcats. The 5’11, 255-pound running back recorded 64 rushing yards, one touchdown and a team-high 8.0 yards per carry in the season opener.
Cincinnati Football: Kennesaw State’s triple option could confuse the Bearcats
There’s always a chance the triple option creates enough confusion to keep the game more competitive than expected but the Bearcats should be prepared. Luke Fickell discussed defending Kennesaw State’s offense via Cincinnati Athletics.
"“All triple option offenses pose a lot of problems. We have to be a little different than we have been just to make sure we’re sound in their ability to throw it more. It’s always a very unique challenge and not just for the defense.”"
Containing the triple option puts a lot of pressure on the front seven but the entire defense will have to stay focused on the ball carrier. It can be difficult for defense’s to decipher where the ball is at times so constantly remaining disciplined is crucial.
It’s definitely not going to be easy to shut down the triple option but Mike Tressel’s defense has plenty of experience to rely on and I’m predicting Ivan Pace Jr, Jabari Taylor and Malik Vann will carry the Bearcats to a blowout win in the home opener.
