Despite failing to score on the opening possession, it quickly became clear that Cincinnati would be able to move the ball against an inexperienced Owls defense and that continued on the following drive.
Ben Bryant hit leading receiver Tyler Scott for a first down before connecting with Tre Tucker one play later for a 42-yard touchdown to give the Bearcats a 7-0 lead with 1:19 remaining in the first quarter.
Just before the first quarter came to a close, Dontay Corleone forced and recovered a fumble to put the Bearcats in position to extend the lead and Ryan Montgomery was able to do so on the next drive.
