The Cincinnati Bearcats radio play-by-play broadcaster for both football and basketball, Dan Hoard, was on ESPN 1530 as a guest on the Mo Egger Radio Show. A quote that Hoard made during the show has gained some attention on social media. "I've been around all of the UC Basketball coaches going back to Bob Huggins. I've never seen offensive coaching like this."

Hoard has spent time watching practices live and having access to coaches and players throughout the tenures of Huggins, Andy Kennedy, Mick Cronin, John Brannen, Wes Miller, and now Jerrod Calhoun. Calhoun was hired for his offensive coaching style, with a lot of these coaches being defensively oriented, the Bearcats should look a lot different than what we have been watching for years.

Last season, Utah State went 29-7, scoring 82.2 points per game, 46th in the nation, ahead of Cincinnati's season average of 73.1 points per game. The Aggies had an offensive rating of 119.7, which was 17th nationally last season. As a team, they shot 49.6% from the field, which was among the national leaders. They also averaged 17.6 assists per game as a team, which demonstrates a real offensive scheme that works.

Last season under Wes Miller, the Bearcats didn't seem to be efficient, having an offensive rating of 107.4 and shot 44.9% from the field. They averaged 13.9 assists per game, which isn't bad, but isn't good either. In the Big 12, you aren't going to "out-athlete" any of the elite programs in the conference. You need an elite defensive scheme, an offensive scheme, and sometimes both just to keep up. Fans were so used to a great defensive performance by Cincinnati, but an abysmal offensive night, losing them the game. It sounds like all of that is about to change as the Bearcats prepare for the upcoming season.
