Conor Barwin, who played for the Cincinnati Bearcats football team from 2005 to 2008, was announced to be a part of the 50th class of the James P. Kelly Athletics Hall of Fame.
Barwin had an odd and memorable career as a Bearcat, immediately becoming a fan favorite. In his freshman season in 2005, he played in 11 games, totalling 8 receptions for 144 yards and 1 touchdown. The 2005-06 Cincinnati Bearcats basketball team was devastated by Injuries, and Barwin joined the team, playing backup power forward at 6-foot-4. Barwin played 40 games for the Bearcats and had career highs of 6 points versus Pittsburgh and 9 points rebounds versus South Carolina.
In his sophomore and junior seasons, Barwin had yet to break out, but totaled 44 receptions for 547 yards and 4 touchdowns. All of these stats across 25 are solid, but nothing that warrants a hall-of-fame career.
In 2008, Barwin received First Team All-Big East honors, as well as being named to the Second Team All-American. He was a Senior Bowl participant and received an invite to the Combine, but all under a different position. Barwin moved from tight end to defensive end in his senior season and broke out.
In 14 games, Barwin had 49 total tackles, 29 of them being solo. He had 14.5 tackles for a loss and 11 sacks. He had two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown against Rutgers. After moving to defensive end and breaking out, Barwin was drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft, No. 46 overall, by the Houston Texans. He played 10 seasons from 2009 to 2018 in the NFL, with his best season being in 2014 as a part of the Philadelphia Eagles. In 16 games, he had 14.5 sacks, 78 tackles, 5 forced fumbles, and 6 passes defended. He earned Pro Bowl honors and Second Team All-Pro honors.
