Former Cincinnati Bearcats tight end and current Cleveland Browns tight end Joe Royer left training camp early due to personal reasons. The Browns drafted Royer in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, No. 170 overall. Royer attended Elder High School in Cincinnati, OH, and, as the No. 2 player in the state of Ohio and the No. 3 tight end in the country, Royer committed to Ohio State. While Royer was in Columbus, his mother unfortunately passed away, and he transferred to Cincinnati to be closer to home.
Royer has dealt with unfortunate events in his football career, and now more is headed Royer's way with reports of him leaving training camp after just one day. The Browns' general manager, Andrew Berry, said, "Out of respect for him and his privacy, I'm not going to get into the details other than to say that he has our full support. We're really happy that he's focused on resolving this matter. I don't have a definite timeline of when he is supposed to be back, but when he does return, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later, we'll get him ramped up quickly and reintegrated in everything," reported ESPN Cleveland Browns reporter Daniel Oyefusi.
There are currently four tight ends listed on the Browns' roster, including Harold Fannin Jr., who caught 72 passes for 731 yards in his rookie season, Jack Stoll, and Blake Whiteheart. Royer is currently listed as the Browns' No.2 tight end, so hopefully his being away from training camp doesn't affect his spot on the depth chart or playing time.
