Former Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby was denied eligibility reinstatement after a gambling controversy was brought to light earlier this offseason that stretches back to his time at Indiana as a redshirt freshman.
Sorsby passed for 2800 yards, 27 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He also added 580 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns, showing his true dual-threat ability. Sorsby transferred out of Cincinnati and to Texas Tech, where the news of his gambling addiction broke. He reportedly checked himself into rehab, which he completed on May 26th in Goodyear, Arizona, to hopefully regain eligibility.
Sorsby's eligibility is in jeopardy because he placed bets on the Indiana Hoosiers football team while a member of the team from 2022-23, leaving a year before Curt Cignetti arrived in Bloomington in 2024. Betting on your own team is a direct violation of the NCAA student-athlete code of conduct, along with Sorsby, who also bet on different sports, which is a violation of the code of conduct. If the NCAA court denies Sorsby's injunction to their reinstatement decision, he is expected to join the NFL's supplemental draft by it's deadline on June 22, for which he is surprisingly reported to have a number of NFL teams interested in him. The Cleveland Browns and New York Jets lead those talks among reports. The NFL has given Sorsby's camp a window of days from July 5th to 12th to hold private workouts and a pro day for teams that would show interest. It is expected that the draft itself will take place in late July.
