Former Bearcats receiver and current Indianapolis Colts receiver Alec Pierce was placed on the PUP list, which is for players who are Physically Unable to Perform. Alec Peirce is recovering from left ankle surgery that he underwent in late March. Peirce had a monster season for the Colts; in 15 games, he caught 47 passes for 1,003 yards and 6 touchdowns. He averaged 21.3 yards per reception, which was second in the NFL. Peirce led the NFL in yards per reception in 2024-25. The Colts had an up-and-down season, starting 8-2 under starting quarterback Daniel Jones before he went down with a torn Achilles in Week 14. Phillip Rivers and Riley Leonard started games in Jones' stead, but the Colts finished the season on a 7-game losing streak and just missed out on the playoffs. With all the success Pierce and the team had with Jones, and with the success he had with backup quarterbacks, the Colts felt comfortable enough to give him a $114 million contract extension this offseason.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen is on the record for saying that the goal is have to Pierce ready for their week one opener against the Baltimore Ravens on September 13th at Lucas Oil Stadium. He stated at the training camp press conference that they still remain optimistic about his recovery timeline regardless of him being placed on the PUP list.
Reports suggest that Pierce may only need another week of rehab before beginning practice next Wednesday, on August 5th. The Colts do seem to be taking a cautious approach towards Pierce and his ankle injury, but they did just give the guy $114 million.
