Jerrod Calhoun made his backcourt a priority early in the Transfer Portal season, with the Bearcats No. 2-rated portal addition being Myles Colvin from Wake Forest. Colvin averaged 11.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 steals per game last season, playing 35 games for the Demon Deacons, starting in 24 of them. He shot 40.3% from the field, 36.0% from three-point range, and 87% from the free throw line. Colvin is from Indianapolis, Indiana, and was the No. 2 player in the state coming out of high school. He originally played for Matt Painter at Purdue for his first two seasons before moving to Winston-Salem.
Colvin's best game of the season came against Syracuse, where he totaled 32 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 block while making 7 three-pointers and going a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line. Colvin thrives in transition, where he is able to take advantage of his athleticism. Utah State was more focused on a half-court offense, but with players like Colvin, Adlan Elamin, and Trevian Carson, it is definitely an identity the Bearcats should have next season.
Calhoun, being an offense-oriented head coach, the guards in the offense are going to matter more in the long term than the bigs. From a recruiting perspective, Calhoun runs an attractive NBA-style offense, which can help develop players into knowing how to play offense at the highest level. Last season at Utah State, Calhoun's guards were outstanding, which is a good selling point for recruits with NBA aspirations, which is Colvin.
