During Jerrod Calhoun's introductory press conference, he made it known that he wants the best basketball players from Cincinnati to play for the Bearcats, and he followed through on that statement. Calhoun picked up sophomore guard Eric Mahaffey from Akron, who played his high school basketball at Archbishop Moeller. Mahaffey stands at 6-foot-6, 200 pounds, and averaged 7.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists during his freshman season at Akron. He shot 53% from the field, 39.1% from the three-point range, and 76.3% from the free-throw line. Mahaffey helped bring the Zips to a 29-6 record and a Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship last season, before losing in the Round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament to Texas Tech.
Mahaffey's best game of the season came against Iona, where he scored 20 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and had 3 assists, shooting 8 of 9 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line.
Eric's brother, Evan Mahaffey, who also attended Moeller, was a big-time college prospect. The 4-star prospect played his freshman season at Penn State before transferring to Ohio State, spending his sophomore and junior seasons in Columbus. He transferred to Akron last season, where he averaged 10.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, playing alongside his brother.
Moeller has had their fair share of former players go to college, even the NBA, most notably being New York Knicks guard Miles McBride and Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes. Former Bearcat Jeremiah Davenport (2019-2023), who averaged 13.4 points and 5.5 rebounds in 2021-22, also attended Moeller High School.
Welcome to Cincinnati, @EricMahaffey20!
