#10: ADRIAN WITTY PICK 6 AGAINST PURDUE

Cincinnati’s season got off to a white hot start. Both the offense and defense seemed to click against their opening opponent the Purdue Boilermakers, foreshadowing the extremely successful inaugural season for Tommy Tuberville that was to come. The play that perhaps most illustrates UC’s dominance that day came midway through the third quarter with Cincinnati’s Big Ten foe down 21-7.

Purdue was desperate to get back into the game after doing next to nothing offensively for the previous 40 minutes or so. Quarterback Rob Henry seemed to try to close the two touchdown deficit all in one play. On first and 10 he reared back and tried to hit a receiver running a post route deep down the middle of the field. Henry grossly overthrew the ball and it floated into safety Adrian Witty’s hands. The junior didn’t waste anytime bursting upfield and, after a few key blocks, scampered into the endzone. The record crowd at Nippert Stadium went wild as Witty’s pick 6 extended Cincinnati’s lead to 21 and put a nail in Purdue’s coffin.
