AAC Power Rankings: Week 2

A lot of yawners during Week 1 in The American.  Mostly what I expected, but we all got a shocker when Central Florida, my preseason #5 in the AAC, was upset by FCS Florida International on Thursday night.  Then Temple earned both itself and the league some serious street cred by defeating big brother Penn State on Saturday.  Other than that, not much was there to be garnered about the league’s top teams, as they all mercilessly maimed I-AA schools.  Next week is judgement week in The American, with most of the league facing much stiffer challenges.

Temple Owls. 4. team. 2399. Temple had the performance of the week in The American, upsetting Penn State for the first time since 1941.  Offensively, Temple was fairly average, totaling 313 yards amd making only 15 first downs.  PJ Walker avoided tirning the ball over, and threw for 143 yards.  Temple’s strong defensive unit kept them in it after Penn State jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead.  The Owls sacked Christian Hackenberg TEN times and forced him to throw under pressure countless more.  The game turned on an apparent Pick-6 with the score tied at 10 in the final minute of the 3rd quarter.  The play was reviewed and the interceptor ruled down at the two yard line, but PJ Walker strolled into the end zone and put the TD back on the board two plays later.  This was a huge win for Temple over their in-state nemesis and traditional bully from State College, and the Owls defense will be a grand challenge for UC next Saturday night.. (1-0, 0-0 AAC). Previous: 6th

2394. Navy coasted past FCS Colgate, who may need some Colgate to freshen up after having the ball run down their throats to the tune of 371 yards and 5 rushing TDs.  Navy led 31-3 at the half, and was so dominant that Keenan Reynolds only threw six passes (completing three).  Navy has an open date next, and we may not really know much about how good they really are until the schedule picks up in October.. (1-0, 0-0 AAC). Previous: 4th. Navy Midshipmen. 5. team
