Following a competitive battle in fall training camp, the Bearcats decided to name Ben Bryant the starting quarterback ahead of the season-opening matchup at Arkansas today. Bryant won the job over sophomore quarterback Evan Prater.

Since last season ended in early January, the coaching staff knew it would have to break in a new starter under center. It seemed like Prater was going to be the obvious choice before Bryant announced his decision to come back to Cincinnati.

After spending three seasons with the Bearcats, Bryant transferred to Eastern Michigan prior to last year. He completed 68.4% of his passing attempts and racked up 3,121 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 13 appearances.

Even though most people expected Prater to take over as Desmond Ridder’s replacement, Bryant will be leading the huddle in the season opener on Saturday afternoon as Cincinnati attempts to upset the 19th ranked Razorbacks in Fayetteville.

It’s possible both quarterbacks will get a chance to take snaps against Arkansas at some point but that likely depends on how the team plays early on. Bryant must come out focused and on target in order to build confidence and set the tone.

The senior quarterback can’t be careless with the ball because committing early turnovers is a recipe for disaster in such a difficult environment. Bryant has thrown 10 interceptions on 481 passing attempts in 24 games throughout his career.

In addition to having an experienced group of pass catchers at his disposal, Bryant has to lean on the talented running back room. Ryan Montgomery is expected to start alongside Bryant in the backfield and should offer the offense a relief valve.

First year offensive coordinator Gino Guidugli is set to take over playing calling duties after spending the last few years as quarterback coach. Guidugli needs to find a way to let Bryant settle in and gain some momentum as the season kicks off.
