Cincinnati Basketball: Regular season preview as Bearcats prepare for Chaminade
By Charles Post
It’s understandable to struggle during head coaching changes but the Bearcats men’s basketball program finally has stability as Wes Miller enters his second season. Cincinnati is scheduled to face Chaminade in the regular season opener on Monday night.
After leading the team in scoring last season, David DeJulius and Jeremiah Davenport are prepared to compete for a conference championship. Although it will be difficult to keep pace with favorite Houston, the Bearcats were picked to finish in third place.
In addition to several returners expected to make an impact, the Bearcats will rely on a group of transfers. Kalu Ezikpe, Landers Nolley II and Rob Phinisee each have multiple years of experience and add depth.
Miller has plenty of elite talent and versatility at his disposal but this season will depend on how well the team can gel. Mika Adams-Woods, Ody Oguama and John Newman III are going to be key to success as well with increased expectations all around.

The Bearcats tip off the season against Chaminade on Monday night at Fifth Third Arena. Following the season opener, Cincinnati will host Cleveland State and Eastern Kentucky before a road trip to Northern Kentucky for the first away game of the season.
Despite being underdogs in the Maui Invitational, the Bearcats will attempt to upset Arizona and make a run. Prior to conference play beginning in December, Cincinnati is set to play 13 games including against Detroit, Miami (Ohio) and Xavier at Fifth Third Arena.
Most fans are hoping to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 but Miller remains focused on improving every day with the season opener around the corner. Miller discussed his current expectations via Cincinnati Athletics.
"“I’ve really liked our guys approach. They’re working, practicing hard and have bought into the things we’re trying to do so I’m pleased in those areas. Are we exactly where I want to be in every facet of how we’re playing? No we’re not. We have six new players. We’ve adjusted our style of play so there are some things that are a work in progress but nothing is due to our players not bringing it every day or not doing what they’re supposed to do. We have another week to get some things in place. I think we all feel certain if we continue to do what we do and stay with the right approach, this has a chance to be a pretty good team.”"
