Bearcats Basketball: Jerrod Calhoun and Staff have addressed this issue through the portal this offseason

One of the more prevalent issues with the Cincinnati Bearcats over the past 5 seasons has been the free-throw shooting. The Bearcats shot 68.1% from the free-throw line as a team this past season. They shot 66.5% in 24-25, 66.4% in 23-24, 71.2% in 22-23, and 69% in 21-22. They never ranked higher than 199th in the past 5 seasons; they blew countless amounts of games over that stretch, barely missing the NCAA Tournament the past 3 seasons because of it. Jerrod Calhoun has put a clear emphasis on free-throw shooting in the signings he has made this transfer portal season, and it shows.

The average free-throw percentage for players on the current roster from last season is 78.2%, a 7% increase, which is much better than anything we have seen over the past 5 seasons under Wes Miller. The worst free-throw shooter on the team, statistically, is Jayden Hastings at 50%. Hastings' sample size from the line last year wasn't huge, so there is plenty of room for growth there as well. The guards that Calhoun has picked up (Tylen Riley, Elijah Perryman, Myles Colvin, Akai Fleming, Trevian Carson), the average between the five of them is 83.2%. Considering that 4 of the 5 of those players will likely play a large role for the team, this is a big deal. Colvin and Riley lead the group, tied with 87% from the free-throw line. Even though it appears the guards are carrying the average for the Bearcats, the player who shot the best from the free throw line was Tyler Tejada, the former CAA Player of the Year, who averaged 17.7 last season, made it to the free throw line for 152 shots, making 134, shot 88.2%.
