Former Cincinnati Bearcats forward Dillon Mitchell was selected by the Boston Celtics No. 40 overall in the second round of the NBA Draft. Mitchell, despite leaving Cincinnati for St. John's and having a decline in scoring, shooting percentage, 3-point percentage, and steals, was one of three players drafted from St. John's Sweet Sixteen roster that lost to Duke. Zuby Ejiofor was drafted No. 23 by the Atlanta Hawks, and Bryce Hopkins was drafted No. 49 by the Denver Nuggets.
Dillon Mitchell was a 5-star recruit as a part of the class of 2022, earning the title of the No. 5 player in the country according to 247 Sports. Mitchell was ranked only behind Arkansas commit Nick Smith, and Duke commits Dariq Whitehead, Dereck Lively II, and Kyle Filipowski. Mitchell started his career by committing to Rodney Terry and the Texas Longhorns. Mitchell spent two seasons in Austin before transferring when Terry was fired. Mitchell went to Cincinnati, averaged a career high in points, steals, three-point percentage, and his best assists-to-turnover season. Mitchell decided to transfer out of Cincinnati after the 2025 season, when Cincinnati lost to UCF in the Crown Tourney in Las Vegas.
Mitchell joins a Celtics team that whiffed on trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo, and some experts are expecting Jaylen Brown to be on the way out as well. With a trade in the future, it is unsure to know if Mitchell will survive, but he should carve out an immediate role on any team he joins. The NBA Summer League starts July 3rd and runs until July 20th.
