Cincinnati Bearcats infielder Quinton Coates spent the summer playing for the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League, being named an all-star of the league and winning the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship.
Coates adds more and more hardware to his impressive resumé. This past NCAA season with the Bearcats, Coates was named to First Team All-Big 12; he was a Cincinnati Male co-athlete of the year, a Big 12 Athlete of the Year nominee, NCBWA Second Team All-American, and ABCA Rawlings First-Team All-Region.
This past season for the Bearcats, Coates totalled 84 hits, 28 of them home runs, with a batting average of .339. He had an on-base percentage of .430 and a slugging percentage of .738. His 79 RBIs tied a Cincinnati single-season record set by Mike Spina in 2008. Coates ranked in the top 10 nationally in home runs (4th), RBIs (5th), and total bases (6th).
He helped carry the Bearcats to a 38-22 record, going 17-13 in the Big 12, which was good enough for sixth in the conference. The Bearcats made the NCAA tournament as an unofficial 2-seed in the Starville Regional, where they played three games, going 1-2 before being eliminated. In those games, Coates struggled, going 2-12 with 4 strikeouts, an RBI, and a BB.
Going into his sophomore year and the Bearcats returning most of their core from last season, Cincinnati could be something special next season if everyone plays to their potential. There is a lot of time between now and the start of next baseball season on February 26th, but head coach Jordan Bischel will have the team ready.
